Letter from The Head of School - 27th June

Dear parents/ carers,
Open Day
This week we hosted families and prospective students for our open day and evening events. Perins students were absolutely tremendous, as always! The feedback from our visitors was so complimentary it was a pleasure to hear. The event historically attracts families with children in year 5 as they are fast approaching decision time for the next stage of their educational journey.
Year 11 Prom
Our year 11’s will be celebrating the end of their Perins journey with their final Perins event as our students tonight. Staff wish all our year 11’s every success in their futures, you were a fantastic year group, and a pleasure to have worked with.
Mobile phones
Following on from the DfE guidance on mobile phone use in school issued earlier in the year, it was interesting to read the Hampshire Local Authority position statement on mobile phone use in schools, issued June 2025. Simultaneously, a number of schools around the county have issued statements declaring they are looking to become smart phone free schools from September. Reading through case studies and the information shared by several of the schools, it is good to see that they are moving to a position that we adopted some time ago. Perins is a mobile phone-free school from the moment the child enters through the school gates in the morning until 15:15. Phones need to be placed in the bottom of a school bag, switched off and not seen or heard, with the consequence that any transgression will mean the phone will be confiscated. A progressive level of confiscation then follows in line with the number of times the rule is broken. Perins will support strong parenting decisions such as not allowing a smartphone to owned/ carried by a child as this will reduce “screen time” and will ensure only a simple device is held in case of travel issues or an emergency outside of school. The Perins Student Services area can assist with any communication needed between home and a child throughout the school day and the laptop caters for all the educational appliances needed for learning in lessons.
Hot Weather
Once again, it looks like we will be amidst a mini heatwave early next week with temperatures tipping into 30 degrees + on Monday and Tuesday then cooling for the rest of the week. With this in mind and due to our young people “getting it right” the last time we applied uniform concessions, the school will allow students to wear their correct Perins PE kit as uniform on Monday and Tuesday and although temperatures drop on the Wednesday, as it will be Sports day, PE kit can be worn on that day too, returning to summer uniform on the Thursday.
We ask that parents complete a quick check and remind their child that incorrect PE kit will be challenged, so no micro shorts or alternative T-shirts or hoodies of any description will be acceptable. Our uniform also forms part of our safeguarding protocol; it becomes a student’s entry “badge” with staff instructed to challenge anyone onsite who is not wearing correct Perins uniform or the appropriately issued visitor’s badge. In the heat students should bring in a water bottle which is refilled in social times and not during a lesson or tutor time and it would be advisable to have sunscreen and a hat when out in the sun.
Please see our parents' guide to Sports Day here.
My Well Being survey
A short 5 question survey which gives the senor leaders of the school an insight to how you as a parent perceive Perins at this moment in time. This snapshot assists the school in monitoring and evaluating how a key stakeholder feels we are performing and contributes to future planning. https://app.myschoolwellbeing.com/survey/begin/240/parent
Perins Professional Development Day (Staff Training) 27th June 2025
The Perins staff spent the day developing their knowledge of how AI can assist in raising standards in education. The impact of this will be that your child will benefit from the staff team producing resources tailored to the learning needs of the individual.
Have an enjoyable weekend
Yours faithfully
