Year 7 Transform Volunteer Project: Making a Difference at Perins

Our Year 7 Transform students have been making a real difference to the school environment! As part of their volunteer project, they worked hard to clear up the school site and install two wonderful bird nest rings, generously donated by our Music teacher, Mr. Ralls.
Why the Nest Rings?
Mr. Ralls saw the many trees around Perins and thought this would be a fantastic way to encourage biodiversity. These nest rings will provide local birds with the materials they need to build their nests, helping to support and protect our wildlife.
The Inspiration Behind the Nest Rings
At his family farm, Mr. Ralls and his family noticed that birds were picking wool from their alpacas to line their nests, leaving clumps missing from their fleece. These nest rings offer a win-win solution—birds get the wool they need, and the alpacas keep their coats intact! Since alpacas are sheared once a year, there is always leftover fleece that cannot be used for clothing, so repurposing it for nesting materials is a brilliant way to reduce waste and support nature.
Where Are They?
Our Year 7 Transform students have placed the nest rings in our Wellbeing Garden—a quiet, secluded space that can be observed from classrooms in Stephenson. We hope to see birds collecting wool and building their nests soon!
Last week, in our Environmental and Sustainability assemblies, students learned about the importance of biodiversity and supporting local wildlife—this project is a wonderful example of that lesson in action!
A huge thank you to our amazing students for their hard work and to Mrs Ralls for his wonderful donation.
