Our Geography department took 12 Year 10 students to Winchester College for some Geography-themed activities. Students began with a tour of the campus, and a focus on the amazing sustainability measures put in place by the college.
This was followed by an insightful climate change workshop where students took on the role of different stakeholders in a UN Summit-style gathering. Working together, using an online tool, students managed to reduce global temperatures to 1.5 degrees below pre-industrial levels. Fantastic work!
“Thank you very much for the workshop, it was very engaging and interesting. Seeing all the diversity of wildlife was super cool” – Sam
With binoculars in hand, the students then ventured off to investigate the biodiversity of the river Itchen. Students studied a variety of flora and fauna including moorheads and swifts to name a few. It’s a shame we didn’t manage to meet the resident otter! Finally, students were guided around Winchester city centre itself to see some of the management strategies that have been put in place to prevent the city from flooding, an interesting insight into the preventative strategy put into place by the council.
“Thank you for today. My favourite part was watching the birds and learning about them” – Phoebe
An amazing day was had by all, thank you to @Winchester College for hosting such an excellent day for our students.
