Head of School’s Letter

Dear parents/carers

I hope you all had an enjoyable Bank Holiday weekend.

Year 11 students nationally are set to enter the GCSE home straight, with practical exams already completed and the final theory exams starting on Thursday 9th May. Students have been emailed personalised exam timetables, however, general information on exams may be found on our website here.  A separate letter has been circulated to the 2019 cohort, with Perins staff wishing the year group the best of luck in their forthcoming exams!

Some outstanding recent achievements I would like to share. Mason O from Year 9 has won the Hampshire Archives Trust’s History project competition and Nia L in Year 7 has reached the national finals of the Modern Foreign Languages Spelling Bee event. Rory S and Annabel S (2023 Perins leaver) both qualified this weekend to represent GB in the Laser Run (running and shooting) at the European Championships in Madeira this July. And news just received. Perins will perform at the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) Awards in Guilford on Sunday the 2nd of June. Selected drama students will form the performance group.

All our latest news items are updated daily in the schools’ online Parent Bulletin.

In assemblies over the next couple of weeks, Perins will commemorate VE day with resources ably prepared by the History team. We will also launch the Perins SIM card, an initiative for students to recognise moments when “Staff Inspired Me” which will allow students to show their appreciation for any adult working at Perins, by sending them a postcard.

Our PE team took a student group to Manchester over the bank holiday weekend and the young people attending had an amazing but tiring time, with a training session, stadium tour, playing a game and then watching the blue side of Manchester post a convincing win. Preparations are underway for the next Perins trips, which are to Barcelona and Paris during the May half term.

It is imperative that a school such as Perins works with and for its local community. This prompted me personally when I was appointed to my first senior position at the school, to relocate to within the Perins catchment area, as this assists in understanding local context and acknowledging this when informing decision making. It is essential for our students, especially those travelling to school from a distance to develop a greater knowledge of the history of the community in which they are being schooled. This assists our young people in developing an affinity with the surrounding area and embracing local traditions and prevailing subcultures, this notably improves long-term adherence to British values. I am pleased to say that over this academic year, we have made giant strides toward rebuilding our previously established local partnerships and establishing new ones.

I am particularly proud of the team of staff and students who have been actively engaged in what is now a wide range of partnership projects, the latest being a cross-curricular partnership with St John’s Northington Church Organ Conservation and Restoration Project. The work culminated in a short film about the Church. I hope this project will be the first of many between Perins and St John’s.

Yours faithfully,

Mark Nevola
